Talking to others about not driving

Most seniors preparing not to drive prefer to talk with their family or doctor. Talking about not driving can be a difficult conversation for everyone. If the conversation is started by you, it is usually easier.

Giving up the keys is an emotional milestone. You could feel fearful and resistant to changes in your life caused by no longer being able to drive. Discuss your concerns and feelings with others, they may have concerns too. Family and friends can support you by:

  • Listening to your concerns
  • Helping you explore alternative transportation available to you
  • Setting time aside to drive you where you need to go
  • Help you stay connected
