Early Planning

The age people need to stop driving differs and depends on many factors, i.e. medical conditions, vision, and physical abilities. Aging begins to affect driving around age 55. The earlier you plan for not driving, the better you can find the plan of action that works best for you.

Plan now for a time when driving will no longer be safe:

  • Have regular medical check-ups and eye exams. A medical exam can reveal physical conditions that affect driving such as:
    • decision-making skills
    • reaction time
    • muscle strength
    • joint flexibility
  • Begin an exercise routine to maintain strength, flexibility and general well-being. For exercise demonstrations, see the AAA Foundation brochure Flexibility Fitness Training Package for Improving Older Driver Performance
  • Make changes as needed to remain safe longer:
    • limit driving to less busy route and times
    • drive in daylight hours
    • add an extra-wide mirror
  • Find out about other transportation options in your area
  • When planning your driving retirement, consider:
    • access to public transportation
    • the ability to walk to services
    • whether transportation is provided by organizations or facilities
