As a person ages it is important to keep physically fit and active. Research has shown that after age 30, inactive people begin to lose their ability to do physical activity faster than those who remain active. Studies have shown that:
- Total decline is not certain
- Exercise can slow down the aging process
Exercise or physical activity is really a tune-up for the heart, muscles and joints. A good exercise program should do 3 things:
- Challenge heart and lungs
- Stretch and strengthen muscles
- Loosen joints to make them flexible
Keeping fit can help older drivers:
- Turn their heads for shoulder checks
- Press the brake and gas pedal
- Steer easier
- Maintain good posture while driving
- Prevent fatigue
Fitness programs for seniors can be found everywhere and are a good way to get started on a regular exercise program. Start with the exercises below to increase and maintain their flexibility. The directions for the exercises are offered both on video and on a separate web page – choose the preferred mode.
Note: Before beginning any exercise program consult their doctor to make sure they can participate.
